Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Slip, slip, purl (ssp): Sl 2 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH nee­dle; re­turn sts to LH nee­dle in turned po­si­tion and p2­tog-tbl—a left-lean­ing sin­gle dec. Make 1 Left (M1L): In­sert LH nee­dle from front to back un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit through back of re­sult­ing loop. Make 1 Right (M1R): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit into front of re­sult­ing loop. Cen­tered Dou­ble De­crease (CDD): Sl 2 sts as if to k2­tog, k1, p2sso. Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH nee­dle to RH nee­dle.

Spe­cial Tech­nique

Twisted Cord: Tie strands tog at both ends, then se­cure 1 knot­ted end to a sta­tion­ary ob­ject. Twist yarn un­til it beg to dou­ble back on it­self, then join knot­ted ends and al­low cord to twist. Se­cure ends with an over­hand knot, leav­ing ex­tra yarn to make tas­sels.

Pat­tern Notes

When shap­ing neck, work de­creases as fol­lows: K1, k2­tog at be­gin­ning of right­side rows and ssk, k1 at end OR p1, ssp at be­gin­ning of wrong-side rows and p2­tog at end.

When shap­ing sides/sleeve ex­ten­sions, work in­creases as fol­lows: K1, M1R at be­gin­ning of right-side rows and M1L, k1 at end.

Back

With straight nee­dles, cast on 151 (167, 183, 199, 215) sts.

Work 11/4 inches in Twisted Rib, end­ing with a WS row. Dec row (RS): Knit to end and dec 18 (20, 22, 24, 26) sts evenly across— 133 (147, 161, 175, 189) sts.

Beg with a purl (WS) row, work in St st un­til piece mea­sures 12 inches from beg, end­ing with a RS row.

Shape Neck & Sleeves Divi­sion row (WS): P66 (73, 80, 87, 94) sts; join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off cen­ter st, purl to end.

Work­ing both sides at once with sep­a­rate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at neck edge [ev­ery 3rd row] 31 (33, 33, 35, 35) times, and at the same time, inc 1 st at each side edge of next and [ev­ery RS row] 8 times, then cast on 9 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Mark each end of last row for beg of sleeve open­ings.

Work even un­til sleeve open­ings mea­sure 3 (3, 31/2, 31/2, 4) inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Neck Divi­sion row (RS): Work 64 (69, 76, 81, 88) sts; join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off cen­ter 41 (45, 45, 49, 49) sts, work to end.

Block pieces to mea­sure­ments. Sew shoul­der seams. Neck Edg­ing With RS fac­ing, cir­cu­lar nee­dle and beg at right shoul­der seam, pick up and k96 (96, 100, 104, 108) sts down right back neck, pm, pick up and k1 st at cen­ter back neck, pm, pick up and k96 (96, 100, 104, 108) sts up left back neck, pick up and k49 (49, 49, 53, 53) sts down left front neck, pick up and k41 (45, 45, 49, 49) sts along bound-off front sts, pick up and k49 (49, 49, 53, 53) sts up right front neck, pm for beg of rnd and join—332 (336, 344, 364, 372) sts. Rnd 1: *K1-tbl, p1; rep from * to end. Rnd 2: Work in Twisted Rib to 1 st be­fore cen­ter back marker, sm, CDD, sm, work in Twisted Rib to end of rnd. Rnd 3: Work in Twisted Rib to end. Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2—328 (332, 340, 360, 368) sts.

Bind off loosely in rib­bing. Sleeve Edg­ing With RS fac­ing and straight nee­dles, pick up and k107 sts evenly along sleeve open­ing. Start­ing with a WS row, work 4 rows in Twisted Rib, end­ing with a RS row. Bind off loosely in rib­bing. Sew side seams. Weave in ends. Back Tie Cut 8 lengths of yarn, each ap­prox 61/4 (61/4, 61/4, 61/2, 61/2) yds long and make a twisted cord ap­prox 66 (66, 68, 70, 70) inches in length.

Thread cord through neck edg­ing 1/2 inch down from shoul­der seams and ap­prox 2 inches up from lower cen­ter back neck, us­ing photo as a guide. Tie ends of cord in a bow.
