Verder Hat

This hat is the per­fect pat­tern for your first lace project. It’s an easy lace mo­tif worked on a back­ground of stock­inette stitch. With a short stitch re­peat, it’s sim­ple to keep your place and learn a fun new tech­nique at the same time!

• Mal­abrigo Chunky (bulky weight; 100% merino wool; 104 yds/100g per hank): 1 (2) hank(s) wa­ter green #83 • Size 9 (5.5mm) 16-inch cir­cu­lar nee­dle • Size 101/2 (6.5mm) 16-inch cir­cu­lar nee­dle and dou­ble-point nee­dles (set of 5) or size needed to ob­tain gauge • 1 re­mov­able stitch marker

Gauge

14 sts and 18 rnds = 4 inches/10cm in St st on larger nee­dle. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pat­tern Stitch

Note: A chart is pro­vided for those pre­fer­ring to work pat st from a chart. Lace (mul­ti­ple of 6 sts) Rnd 1: Purl. Rnd 2 and all even-num­bered rnds: Knit. Rnd 3: *Yo, k2­tog; rep from * around. Rnd 5: Purl. Rnd 7: *Yo, ssk, k4; rep from * around. Rnd 9: *K1, yo, ssk, k1, k2­tog, yo; rep from * around. Rnd 11: *K2, yo, sk2p, yo, k1; rep from * around.

Hat

With smaller cir­cu­lar nee­dle, cast on 60 (66) sts, pm for beg of rnd and join with­out twist­ing. Rib­bing Rnd 1: *K2, p3, k1; rep from * around. Rnds 2–12: Rep Rnd 1. Body Change to larger cir­cu­lar nee­dle, knit 1 rnd.

Work Rnds 1–12 of Lace pat once, then work Rnds 1–5 of Lace pat once more.

Work in St st (knit ev­ery rnd) un­til hat mea­sures 71/2 inches. Crown Note: Change to dou­ble-point nee­dles when sts no longer com­fort­ably fit on 16-inch cir­cu­lar nee­dle. Size Large Only Setup Rnd 1: K2­tog, knit to last 2 sts, ssk—64 sts. Setup Rnd 2: Knit. Both Sizes Rnd 1: *K2­tog, k11 (12), ssk; rep from * around—52 (56) sts. Rnd 2: Knit. Rnd 3: *K2­tog, k9 (10), ssk; rep from * around—44 (48) sts. Rnd 4: Knit. Rnd 5: *K2­tog, k7 (8), ssk; rep from * around—36 (40) sts.

Rnd 6: Knit. Rnd 7: *K2­tog, k5 (6), ssk; rep from * around—28 (32) sts. Rnd 8: *K2­tog, k3 (4), ssk; rep from * around—20 (24) sts. Rnd 9: *K2­tog, k1 (2), ssk; rep from * around—12 (16) sts. Rnd 10: [K2­tog] around—6 (8) sts.

Fin­ish­ing

Cut yarn, leav­ing an 8-inch tail. Thread yarn onto ta­pes­try nee­dle and thread through rem sts. Gather sts and tie off.

Block hat. With ta­pes­try nee­dle, weave in ends.
