Olen­tangy Shawl

Worked from the bot­tom up with short-row shap­ing, this cres­cent shawl fea­tures an easy lace pat­tern with a garter stitch body. Bulky-weight yarn makes this quick and cozy.

Gauge

9 sts and 17 rows = 4 inches/10cm in garter st with smaller nee­dle. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pat­tern Stitch

Easy Lace (mul­ti­ple of 4 sts + 5) Row 1 (RS): K1, k2­tog, yo, *k1, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2. Row 2 and all WS rows: K1, purl to last st, k1. Row 3: Knit. Row 5: K2, yo, *sk2p, yo, k1, yo; rep from * to last 3 sts, ssk, k1. Row 7: Knit. Row 8: Purl. Rep Rows 1–8 for pat.

Spe­cial Tech­niques

Pi­cot Cast-On: Us­ing the knit­ted cas­ton method (see page 79), *cast on 4 sts, bind off 2 sts, slip st on RH nee­dle back to LH nee­dle; rep from * un­til all sts have been cast on. Stretchy Bind-Off: K2, slip sts from RH nee­dle to LH nee­dle and k2­tog-tbl, *k1, sl 2 sts from the RH nee­dle to LH nee­dle, k2­tog-tbl; rep from * un­til all sts have been bound off.

Pat­tern Notes

Shawl is worked from the bot­tom up.

There is no need to wrap turn­ing stitches for the short rows (see page 79). The gap that’s cre­ated be­tween stitches when the piece is turned to start a new short row is closed by a de­crease worked on the fol­low­ing row.

Shawl

With larger nee­dle and us­ing Pi­cot Cast-on, cast on 169 sts.

Change to smaller nee­dle and knit 2 rows. Bor­der Work [Rows 1–8 of Easy Lace pat] 5 times. Dec row (RS): K1, k2­tog, yo, *k1, yo, sk2p, k1, yo, sk2p, yo; rep from * to last 6 sts, k1, yo, sk2p, yo, k2—149 sts. Next row (WS): K1, purl to last st, k1.

Knit 2 rows. Body Work short rows as fol­lows: Short-Row Set 1 (RS): K83, turn; (WS): K17, turn. Short-Row Set 2 (RS): Knit to 1 st be­fore turn­ing gap, ssk, k2, turn; (WS): Knit to 1 st be­fore turn­ing gap, k2­tog, k2, turn—2 sts dec. Rep [Short-Row Set 2] 21 times—105 sts. Knit 1 row. Us­ing the Stretchy Bind-off, bind off all sts.

Fin­ish­ing

Weave in ends but do not trim flush to piece.

Block shawl to mea­sure­ments, pin­ning pi­cots as de­sired.

Trim any ends.
