• Univer­sal Yarn Up­town Worsted medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (31/2 oz/180 yds/100g per skein): 5 skeins #337 neon yel­low 1 skein each #314 lime, #331 sap­phire, #339 pur­ple panic and #347 orange

• Size G/6/4mm cro­chet hook or size needed to ob­tain gauge

• Ta­pes­try nee­dle

• Lock­ing stitch mark­ers

• Polyester fiber­fill

GAUGE

9 sc = 2 inches; 6 sc rows = 1 inch

PAT­TERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work pro­gresses. Join with slip stitch as in­di­cated un­less oth­er­wise stated. Be­fore join­ing Spikes, Tail and Legs to Body, in­sert blunt end of ta­pes­try nee­dle un­der back hor­i­zon­tal bar of sin­gle cro­chet stitches of Body to slightly stretch and en­large for eas­ier in­ser­tion of hook.

SPE­CIAL TECH­NIQUES

At­tach­ment tech­nique: With WS fac­ing, hold in­di­cated piece where spec­i­fied or de­sired to Body with RS tog, work­ing through both lay­ers [in­sert hook into next ch-1 sp or st of top layer and in back hor­i­zon­tal bar of cor­re­spond­ing st on Body, yo, pull up a lp and draw through lp on hook] as many times as nec­es­sary to at­tach.

Fas­ten off at­tach­ment:

Fas­ten off leav­ing a long tail, thread tail on ta­pes­try nee­dle and use to sew top of last row to back of Body to se­cure.

Make 2.

Row 1 (WS): Beg at bot­tom edge with yel­low, ch 69, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (68 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (70 sc) Row 3: Rep row 2. (72 sc)

Rows 4–47: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Place marker in first st of row 29. Row 48: Ch 1, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) in next 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (70 sc)

Row 49: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rows 50–53: Rep rows 48 and 49 al­ter­nately twice. (66 sc)

Rows 54–60: Rep row 48, do not turn at end of last row.

(52 sc) Place marker in 35th st of row 60. Neck edg­ing row: Work­ing along left side edge in ends of rows, work 29 sc evenly sp to next marker, re­po­si­tion marker to last sc made for neck bot­tom edge. Fas­ten off.

HEAD

Row 1 (RS): Beg at bot­tom with orange, ch 15, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch, turn. (16 sc)

Rows 2–8: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across to last st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (30 sc)

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Row 10: Rep row 2. (32 sc)

Rows 11–14: Rep rows 9 and 10 al­ter­nately twice. (36 sc)

Rows 15–32: Rep row 9. Place marker in last st of row 15.

Row 33: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in last 2 sts, turn. (34 sc) Row 34: Rep row 9. Rows 35–38: Rep rows 33 and 34 al­ter­nately twice. (30 sc) Rows 39–44: Rep row 33. Do not fas­ten off. (18 sc)

Head Assem­bly

A. Place Head RS up on Body, match­ing mark­ers at left side edges and match­ing first st of Head to marked 35th st at top of Body,

B. work­ing through both lay­ers by in­sert­ing hook into both lps of Head sts and front lp only of Body top sts, sc dec in first 2 sts, sc in each of next 14 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts,

C. work 29 sc evenly sp in ends of rows of Head and front lp only of next 29 sts at Body side edge to next marker on Body (neck bot­tom edge) and row 15 of Head,

D. work­ing rem sts through Head only, sc evenly sp in ends of rows to foun­da­tion ch of Head, sc in op­po­site side of each foun­da­tion ch across, sc evenly sp in ends of rows along right side edge of Head to top of Head, join with sl st in first st of rnd. Fas­ten off orange leav­ing a long tail.

E. Thread yarn tail through ta­pes­try nee­dle and use to sew rem of Head outer edge to Body, lightly stuff­ing be­fore fin­ish­ing.

SPOTS

X–Large Make 1 each pur­ple, orange & lime. Rnd 1: Make a slip ring (see il­lus­tra­tion), 8 sc in ring, join (see Pat­tern Notes) in first st. (8 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (16 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) around, join. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) around, join. (32 sc) Rnd 5: Ch 1, (2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts) around, join and fas­ten off leav­ing a long tail. (40 sc)

Large

Make 5 pur­ple, 3 orange & 2 lime.

Rnds 1–4: Rep rnds 1–4 of X–Large spot. Fas­ten off leav­ing a long tail. (32 sc)

Medium

Make 3 sap­phire & 2 lime.

Rnds 1 & 2: Rep rnds 1 and 2 of X–Large spot. Fas­ten off leav­ing a long tail. (16 sc)

Small

Make 6 sap­phire.

Rnd 1: Rep rnd 1 of X–Large spot. Fas­ten off leav­ing a long tail. (8 sc)

Body Assem­bly

A. Use yarn tails to sew 2 small sap­phire Spots for eyes and 2 medium lime Spots for nos­trils to Head where de­sired and rem of Spots to both sides of Body where de­sired.

Note: Be sure to re­verse po­si­tion of 2nd Body piece so neck edg­ing row is at right side edge of Body be­fore sewing Spots.

B. Hold­ing Body pieces with WS tog, join yel­low to marked sts at top edges in un­worked back lp of Body front and both lps of 2nd Body,

C. work­ing through both lay­ers, ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each st in same man­ner to next marker at neck bot­tom,

D. sc evenly sp through both lay­ers in ends of rows to bot­tom edge of Body,

E. work­ing in op­po­site side of foun­da­tion ch, 2 sc in first ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch,

F. sc evenly sp in ends of rows along right side edge of Body,

G. sc in each rem un­worked st across top edge, join­ing to first sc of rnd, in­sert­ing fiber­fill to de­sired thick­ness be­fore fin­ish­ing. Fas­ten off.

LEGS

Make 4. Row 1 (RS): With yel­low, ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (14 sc) Rows 2–10: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Leg Assem­bly

Fold Leg in half with WS tog, match­ing first and last st of row 10, ch 1, work 1 sc through both lay­ers in each of next 7 sts, ch 1, work 10 sc evenly sp through both lay­ers at folded bot­tom edge to next cor­ner, ch 1, work­ing in op­po­site side of foun­da­tion ch, sc in each of next 7 chs, ch 1, work 10 sc evenly sp in ends of rows across top of Leg, ch 1, join in first sc of rnd, turn.

Leg At­tach­ment

With RS of Leg held where de­sired at Body bot­tom edge and work­ing through both lay­ers, [in­sert hook into next ch-1 of Leg and into cor­re­spond­ing st on Body, yo, pull up a lp and draw through lp on hook], work At­tach­ment Tech­nique (see Spe­cial Tech­niques) through both lay­ers in next 10 sts, rep be­tween [ ] once, fas­ten off at­tach­ment (see Spe­cial Tech­niques).

TAIL

Row 1 (RS): With yel­low, ch 57, sc dec in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, sc in each ch across to last 2 chs, sc dec in last 2 chs, turn. (54 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sts, sc in each st across to last 2 sts, sc dec in next 2 sts, turn. (52 sc) Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. Rows 4–24: Rep row 2. (10 sc)

Rows 25–28: Rep rows 2 and 3 al­ter­nately twice. (6 sc)

Row 29: Ch 1, [sc dec in next 2 sts] 3 times, turn. (3 sc)

Row 30: Do not ch 1, sc dec in next 3 sts, turn. Drop lp from hook and place on st marker. (1 sc) Fold WS of Tail tog and mark fold (bot­tom edge of Tail). Un­fold Tail and sew 1 large spot where de­sired on each side of Tail be­tween bot­tom fold and curved up­per edges. Place lp back on hook.

Tail Assem­bly

Re­fold Tail, do not ch 1, work­ing through both lay­ers, sc evenly sp in ends of rows along top curved edges to end of row 1, work­ing in op­po­site side of foun­da­tion ch, sc in each ch across to cre­ate straight edge of Tail, lightly stuff be­fore clos­ing, turn.

Tail At­tach­ment

With RS of Tail straight edge and Body right side edge held tog and hav­ing Tail bot­tom fold 1 or 2 sts above last st at Body bot­tom, ch 1, work at­tach­ment tech­nique to at­tach sc sts of Tail to Body. Fas­ten off.

SPIKES

Make 9.

Row 1 (WS): Beg at tip and with 2 strands blue held tog, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (1 sc) Row 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in st, turn. (3 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (5 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st, do not turn. (7 sc)

Edg­ing rnd: Do not ch 1, work 7 sc evenly sp across ends of rows to Spike tip, ch 1, work 7 sc evenly sp in ends of rows to row 4 (bot­tom edge of Spike), ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 5 sts, 2 sc in last st, join with sl st in first st of rnd, fas­ten off 1 strand, turn. (23 sc)

Spike At­tach­ment

With RS tog, place bot­tom edge of Spike where de­sired on Body, use at­tach­ment tech­nique to join next 9 sc of Tail to Body. Fas­ten off. Rep above to make and join ad­di­tional Spikes to Body along up­per edges of Body and Tail where de­sired.
