Add a new twist to Tu­nisian cro­chet. By “break­ing the rules” and turn­ing your work af­ter the for­ward pass, you’ll cre­ate an in­ter­est­ing re­versible cowl that is not only fun to make but will add a pretty touch to your fall wardrobe.

MA­TE­RI­ALS

• Red Heart With Love medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn (7 oz/ 370 yds/198g per skein): 1 skein each #1303 Aran

and #1542 aubergine • Size L/11/8mm Tu­nisian cro­chet hook or size needed to ob­tain gauge • Ta­pes­try nee­dle • Jumbo lock­ing stitch marker

GAUGE

11 sts = 4 inches; 7 rows = 4 inches

PAT­TERN NOTES

Each row in Tu­nisian cro­chet con­sists of two parts: a For­ward Pass in which stitches are picked up and a Re­turn Pass in which stitches are worked off the hook. Each For­ward Pass will be worked with aubergine. Each Re­turn Pass will be worked with Aran. Carry un­used color along­side edges; do not fas­ten off un­til so stated. Scarf is worked flat, then short ends are joined. Weave in loose ends as work pro­gresses. Join with slip stitch as in­di­cated un­less oth­er­wise stated.

SPE­CIAL STITCHES

Work loops off hook (work lps off hook): Ch 1 (see A of illustration), [yo, pull through

2 lps on hook (see B of illustration)] across.

Tu­nisian dou­ble stitch (Tds):

Yo, with yarn in back, in­sert hook un­der front ver­ti­cal bar from side to side, yo, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook.

Tu­nisian sim­ple stitch (Tss):

With yarn in back, in­sert hook un­der front ver­ti­cal bar from side to side, yo, draw up a lp (see illustration).

Tu­nisian purl stitch (Tps):

Bring yarn to front, in­sert hook un­der next front ver­ti­cal bar as if to work Tss, bring yarn across front of ver­ti­cal bar and to back, yo, draw up a lp (see illustration).

Tu­nisian re­verse stitch (Trs):

With yarn in back, in­sert hook un­der back strand of next ver­ti­cal bar, yo, draw up a lp.

SCARF

Row 1 For­ward Pass (WS): With aubergine (see Pat­tern Notes), ch 120, work­ing in back

bar of chs (see illustration), pick up a lp in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch across, leav­ing all lps on hook, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 1 Re­turn Pass: With Aran, work lps off hook (see Spe­cial Stitches). Trans­fer rem lp to lock­ing stitch marker. Row 2 For­ward Pass (RS): Turn, in­sert hook un­der front

bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, ch 1, *2 Tds (see Spe­cial Stitches) un­der next st, sk next st, rep from * work­ing 1 Tds un­der fi­nal st, drop aubergine. (120 sts)

Row 2 Re­turn Pass: Trans­fer Aran from stitch marker to hook, work lps off hook. Trans­fer rem lp to lock­ing stitch marker.

Row 3 For­ward Pass: Turn, in­sert hook un­der front bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, Tss (see Spe­cial

Stitches) in each st across, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 3 Re­turn Pass: Trans­fer Aran from stitch marker to hook, do not ch 1, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across. Trans­fer rem lp to lock­ing stitch marker.

Row 4 For­ward Pass: Turn, in­sert hook un­der front ver­ti­cal bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, Tps (see

Spe­cial Stitches) in each st un­til 1 rem, Tss in fi­nal st, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 4 Re­turn Pass: Rep Row 3 Re­turn Pass.

Row 5: Rep Row 2 For­ward Pass and Re­turn Pass. Row 6 For­ward Pass: Turn, in­sert hook un­der front bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, Trs (see Spe­cial

Stitches) in each st un­til 1 rem, Tss in fi­nal st, drop aubergine. (120 sts) Row 6 Re­turn Pass: Rep Row 3 Re­turn Pass.

Row 7: Rep Row 4 For­ward Pass and Re­turn Pass. Rows 8–11: Rep Rows 2–5. Fas­ten off Aran, leav­ing a 16-inch tail at con­clu­sion of Row 11. Bind Off: Turn, in­sert hook un­der front bar of first st, yo and draw aubergine through st, ch 1, *sl st as if to Tss in next st, ch 1, sk next st, rep from * across, end­ing sl st in fi­nal st, fas­ten off leav­ing a 16-inch tail. FIN­ISH­ING With aubergine tail and ta­pes­try nee­dle, work­ing in ends of match­ing rows, whip­stitch (see

illustration) short ends of scarf tog. With Aran tail and ta­pes­try nee­dle, con­nect ends of re­turn por­tion of rows with a match­ing whip­stitch, while at the same time keep­ing wrong side of work as neat as pos­si­ble.
