9 dc = 1 inch; rnds 1 and 2 = 11/2 inches in diameter

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Each Coaster requires 2 pumpkins. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated. Chain-3 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Do not turn rounds unless otherwise stated. Chain-2 at beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.

COASTER PUMPKIN Make 4.

Rnd 1 (RS): With orange, ch 4, join (see Pattern Notes) in first ch to form a ring, ch 3 (see Pat

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as beg ch-3, 2 dc in each st around, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (40 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st as beg ch-3, dc in next st, [2 dc in next st, dc in next st] around, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (60 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sc in next st, *hdc in next st, [dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st] 5 times, sc in each of next 3 sts, hdc in next st*, sc in each of next 5 sts, rep from * to * once, sc in each of rem 3 sts, join in beg sc. (70 sts)

Rnd 1 (RS): Leaving a 1-inch length at beg, with black, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in beg sc. Pull beg 1-inch length to close opening, do not turn. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st as beg ch-1, sc in next st, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sc in next st] twice, join in beg sc, leaving an 8-inch length, fasten off. (9 sc, 3 ch-2 sps)

STEM Make 2.

Row 1: With brown, ch 15, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 10 chs, sl st in next 3 chs, turn. (11 sc, 3 sl sts) Row 2: Working in back lps (see Stitch Guide) only, ch 1, sl st in each of first 3 sts, sc in each of next 11 sts, turn. (3 sl sts, 11 sc)

Vines

Row 6: Ch 12, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in each of next 10 chs, sl st in ch-2 sp of Leaf, ch 15, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 sc in each of next 13 chs, sl st in ch-2 sp of Leaf, leaving 8-inch length, fasten off. To form curl of Vines, twist each Vine.

ASSEMBLY

Using photo as a guide, position Facial Features on Pumpkin front, place a drop of glue on WS of Facial Feature and position on Pumpkin, rep with rem 7 pieces. When completely dry, with a length of black and sewing needle, tack each point of the Facial Features to Pumpkin. Using care not to sew Stem to rnd 7 of Pumpkin, with length of brown, sew sl st end of Stem to rnd 5 of Pumpkin, sew Stem edges to rnd 6, leaving rnd 7 free to work Pumpkin Finishing. With length of green, sew Leaf next to Stem. With steam iron, gently block Pumpkins using care not to disturb Facial Features.

PUMPKIN FINISHING

Rnd 1: With Pumpkin with Features facing, hold a plain Pumpkin on back with WS tog and matching sts, join orange in st behind Leaf, ch 1, working through both thicknesse­s throughout, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sc in each rem st around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
