Lat­tice Afghan

This un­usual afghan is made by sewing 3-inch mo­tifs to­gether and then work­ing sur­face cro­chet in di­ag­o­nal rows first in one di­rec­tion and then in the op­po­site di­rec­tion, cre­at­ing raised tex­tu­ral stitches that add a lot of “wow” fac­tor!

PAT­TERN NOTES

Chain- 2 at be­gin­ning of round does not count as first dou­ble cro­chet un­less oth­er­wise stated. Join with slip stitch as in­di­cated un­less oth­er­wise stated.

AFGHAN MO­TIF

Make 270. Rnd 1: Make a slip ring ( see il­lus­tra­tion), 12 hdc in ring, join ( see Pat­tern Notes) in top of first hdc. ( 12 hdc) Rnd 2: Ch 2 ( see Pat­tern Notes), dc in first st, [(dc, fptr— see Stitch Guide, dc) in next st, dc in next st, ch 2, dc in next st] around, end­ing last rep with ch 2, join in top of first dc. ( 4 fptr, 4 ch sps, 16 dc) Rnd 3: (Ch 2, dc) in first st, [dc in next st, (dc, fptr, dc) in next st, dc in next 2 sts, ch 3, sc in ch- 2 sp, ch 3, dc in next st] around, join­ing af­ter last ch- 3. ( 24 dc, 4 fptr, 6 ch sps) Rnd 4: Ch 1, * hdc in next 3 sts, ( hdc, fpdc— see Stitch Guide, hdc) in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, ( 2 hdc in ch sp) twice; rep from * around, join with sl st in first hdc, and leav­ing a 6- inch end for sewing, fas­ten off. AS­SEM­BLY

Work­ing in back lps ( see Stitch Guide) only, sew Mo­tifs tog in rows of 15 across and 18 down, us­ing the sewing end on each Mo­tif for the short rows. Weave in all other ends se­curely. Lay Afghan flat with a short end to­ward you. With scraps of yarn or stitch mark­ers, mark ends of all rnd 4 fpdc sts along the bot­tom and right edges, as they slant up to the right.

FIRST LAT­TICE

Join yarn in a marked fpdc on rnd 4 of Mo­tif, ch 1, *( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of fpdc, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around posts of next 2 fptr, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of the same dc of rnd 1 where fptr is worked, sk across slip ring, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of the same dc of rnd 1 where op­po­site fptr is worked, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around posts of next 2 fptr, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of fpdc on rnd 4 of Mo­tif, ( sc, ch 2, sc) at tip of Mo­tif where it is stitched to tip of next Mo­tif; rep from * as many times as needed. At end of row, sl st in base of last sc and fas­ten off. Rep for each marked row of fp sts.

SEC­OND LAT­TICE

Join yarn in an un­marked fpdc on rnd 4 of Mo­tif to work cross­ways from First Lat­tice rows, ch 1, *( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of fpdc, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around posts of next 2 fptr, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of the same dc of rnd 1 where fptr is worked, ch 1, sk across slip ring, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of the same dc of rnd 1 where op­po­site fptr is worked, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around posts of next 2 fptr, ( sc, ch 2, sc) around post of fpdc on rnd 4 of Mo­tif, ( sc, ch 2, sc) in ch- 2 sp of First Lat­tice at tip of Mo­tif, rep from * as many times as needed. At end of row, sl st in base of last sc and fas­ten off. Rep for each rem un­marked row of fp sts.

EDG­ING

With RS fac­ing, join yarn in cor­ner to work across short end.

Rnd 1: **( Sc, ch 9, sc) in cor­ner, * sk next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, ( sc, ch 9, sc) in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, sc dec ( see Stitch Guide) in next 2 fpdc over Mo­tif join, ch 9, hdc in side of sc dec, rep from * across short end to last mo­tif, sk next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, ( sc, ch 9, sc) in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, ( sc, ch 9, sc) in cor­ner, now work­ing up long side, sc in each hdc and hdc in each fpdc at each Mo­tif join across, rep from ** once, join in first sc. Rnd 2: Sl st into first ch sp, ch 1, *( work 11 sc in ch sp, sk next st, sc in next 5 sc, sk next st) across short end, work 11 sc in cor­ner ch sp, sk next sc, sc in each st across long side, sk last sc, rep from * once, join in first sc, fas­ten off.

FIN­ISH­ING

Weave in ends; block. Cut 12 12- inch strands of yarn for fringe for each lp on short ends, hold­ing all stands tog, fold in half, pull fold through lp, pull ends through fold, pull tight. Trim fringe ends even.
