Sometimes a little legwork is necessary to get the shot, which was the case for marine photographer Onne van der Wal on a recent trip to Hawaii. “I had seen pics of the stunning Napali coast, which is on the northwestern side of Kauai,” says van der Wal. “I thought it would be cool to get a sailboat underway in front of those cliffs and shoot it from the air for my new book Sailing America. The problem is there are very few sailboats in and around Kauai, so I put out a call for help. Honolulu-based sailing photographer Lauren Easley popped up and put me in touch with Craig Hines, who owns Sarasvati, a 47-foot Beneteau that calls Hanalei Bay on Kauai home. Luck was on my side, and Craig was happy to go out for a sail while I flew overhead and clicked away!”
