Mayor accused of paying off college loan with public money
MILLBROOK >> The mayor of this Dutchess County village has been accused of stealing $1,700 in government money to pay off college loans.
Laura Hurley was arrested on charges of stealing $1,700 from the town of Washington in 2014 and 2015, when she was a bookkeeper for the town.
Millbrook sits within the town of Washington.
Hurley was charged last Thursday with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and official misconduct, a misdemeanor.
Her attorney said it was a bookkeeping error in which Hurley accidentally used a municipal account to pay for her daughter’s school loans.
Hurley is due back in court on Oct. 20.
