Edible wild plants focus of talk
WHAT: Talk, “Wild Plants I Have Known ... and Eaten” WHEN: Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Vassar Barns in the Vassar Farm and Ecological Preserve, 51 Vassar Farm Lane, Poughkeepsie
DETAILS: Russ Cohen, an expert forager, will give a talk about native edible plants. Cohen’s talk will feature a 90-minute slide show showing species of native edible wild plants suitable for adding to the landscape, or nibbling on if they are encountered in other locales. He’ll discuss keys to the identification of each species and highlight which portions are edible. The talk will also address availability and preparation method(s), along with guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging. The program is free and open to the public.

Ukrainian Children’s Day program in Ellenville
WHAT: Ukrainian Children’s Day WHEN: Oct. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. WHERE: Ellenville Library & Museum, 40 Center St., Ellenville
DETAILS: Arts Mid-Hudson Folk Arts Program, the library and museum, and the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Branch 95 present Ukrainian Children’s Day. During the event, children can learn about Ukrainian children’s culture through interactive craft stations led by volunteers from the area Ukrainian community. The program is free and open to the public.
