Race to pro­mote lit­er­acy on Oct. 16

“Let’s Get Lit­er­ate 5k,” a char­ity race aimed at al­le­vi­at­ing global lit­er­acy, will take place at 9 a.m. Oct. 16 at the in­ter­sec­tion of Plains Road and Pen­cil Hill.

The event will do­nate all pro­ceeds to The Lit­er­ate Earth Project, a non­profit that cre­ates li­braries in Uganda by em­pow­er­ing and em­ploy­ing lo­cal com­mu­ni­ties, of­fer­ing sup­port to sus­tain con­tin­ued growth and part­ner­ing with lo­cal en­ti­ties and ed­u­ca­tors. The project works to pro­vide de­vel­op­ing coun­tries with books, li­braries and lit­er­acy pro­grams.

This fam­ily-friendly race gives ath­letes of all ages and abil­i­ties an op­por­tu­nity to run a flat course (half Plains Road, half Wal­lkill Val­ley Rail Trail).
