Man rescued after driving SUV into pond
A Columbia County man was rescued unhurt after his SUV ran off Columbia County Route 21B on Tuesday and wound up in a private pond, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert A. Brooks, Jr., 38, of Ghent, who was alone in the 2006 Ford Explorer at the time of the accident, was sitting on the roof of the partially submerged vehicle when the Ghent Fire Department and Chatham Rescue Squad arrived to assist Columbia County sheriff’s deputies in helping him get to dry land.
Rescuers extended a ladder horizontally to the vehicle, which was just a few feet out, and Brooks was able to walk on it to reach the shore.
Brooks told rescuers he fell asleep at the wheel, the Sheriff’s Office said.
