State police investigator dies from Sept. 11 illness
A state police investigator who lived in Dutchess County has died from an illness stemming from his work at the World Trade Center site after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the state police superintendent said Thursday.
Paul R. Stuewer died Wednesday.
Superintendent George P. Beach II said Stuewer, working as a state trooper 15 years ago, was assigned to New York City to help with the search and recovery efforts after the 9/11 attacks brought down the twin towers in Lower Manhattan.
Stuewer served in the state police for 26 years, working as a trooper in Millbrook-based Troop K until being promoted to investigator in 2004. His most recent assignment was with the state police’s New York City Drug Enforcement Task Force, Beach said.
Stuewer is survived by his wife, their children and his parents.
Funeral arrangements were pending Thursday.
