State po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tor dies from Sept. 11 ill­ness

A state po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tor who lived in Dutchess County has died from an ill­ness stem­ming from his work at the World Trade Cen­ter site af­ter the ter­ror­ist at­tacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the state po­lice su­per­in­ten­dent said Thurs­day.

Paul R. Stuewer died Wed­nes­day.

Su­per­in­ten­dent Ge­orge P. Beach II said Stuewer, work­ing as a state trooper 15 years ago, was as­signed to New York City to help with the search and re­cov­ery ef­forts af­ter the 9/11 at­tacks brought down the twin tow­ers in Lower Man­hat­tan.

Stuewer served in the state po­lice for 26 years, work­ing as a trooper in Mill­brook-based Troop K un­til be­ing pro­moted to in­ves­ti­ga­tor in 2004. His most re­cent as­sign­ment was with the state po­lice’s New York City Drug En­force­ment Task Force, Beach said.

Stuewer is sur­vived by his wife, their chil­dren and his par­ents.

Fu­neral ar­range­ments were pend­ing Thurs­day.
