Kingston double teams fall in 2nd round of OCIAAs
Kingston High’s two doubles teams both won one match, but lost in the Round of 16 at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association girls tennis tournament.
The Tigers’ first doubles team of Patricia Kuster and Molly Schatzel rallied to defeat Washingtonville’s top duo of Colleen Garwood and Alyssa Jin. They lost the first set 7-6 on a 7-3 tie breaker, evened the match by taking the second set 6-3, then won a super tiebreaker 10-7.
Kingston’s wild-card team of Sally Marie Ryan and Vyda VanDenberg cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Washingtonville’s wild-card tandem of Julia McNelly and Ruth Gannon.
Both, however, lost in the next round. Warwick’s wild-card team of Jackie Grundfast and Ava Ghobadian overpowered Kuster and Schatzel, 6-1, 6-1, while Newburgh Free Academy’s Isabelle Goings-Perrot and Riddhi Patel defeated Ryan and VanDenberg, 6-1, 6-3.
The Kingston teams needed to win those matches to qualify for next week’s Section 9 tournament.
