‘Belfast Blues’ at SUNY New Paltz on Oct. 14, 15
WHAT: Play, “Belfast Blues” WHEN: Oct. 14 and 15 at 8 p.m. WHERE: McKenna Theatre on the SUNY New Paltz campus, 1 Hawk Drive, New Paltz DETAILS: “Belfast Blues,” a one-woman play written and performed by Geraldine Hughes, comes to SUNY New Paltz. “Belfast Blues” is a tapestry of stories told from Hughes’ perspective as a child in the war-torn Belfast of the 1980s. These stories bear witness to the many faces of “trying to live a normal life” amidst the violence born of the long-standing grudge between Catholics and Protestants. The play is directed by Carol Kane, who appeared in the television series “Taxi” and the movies “Annie Hall” and “Dog Day Afternoon.” Tickets are $20 and $18 for seniors ages 62 and older, as well as SUNY New Paltz faculty and staff and non-SUNY New Paltz students. Screening of documentary on immigrants at Vassar
WHAT: Screening of documentary WHEN: Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. WHERE: Room 203 in Taylor Hall on the campus of Vassar College, 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie DETAILS: A new documentary, “A Daring Journey: From Immigration to Education,” follows the stories of four individuals who risked their lives to cross the border from Mexico to the United States. Two of the film’s subjects, Ruben and Janet Robles, came to the U.S. as a young couple. The documentary tells the story of their son’s time as a student at Vassar, which seeks to recruit first-generation, low-income students. Ruben Robles Jr. graduated from Vassar in 2014. Another story charts a man’s early days in the U.S. living in a shack, eventually going to law school and becoming a California state attorney.
