Police release details of fatal shooting by N.Y. police officer

Daily Freeman (Kingston, NY) - - OBITUARIES -

SYRACUSE >> An ex-convict who served prison time for weapon possession was shot and killed by a police officer he fired at the officer during a traffic stop near Syracuse University, authorities said Monday.

City of Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said the officer had pulled over a car late Sunday night because the vehicle’s tail lights weren’t on. While speaking to the man behind the wheel, the officer noticed the handle of a handgun inside the car and started to back away, telling the driver to show his hands, Fowler said.

The man then got out of the car and fired several times at the officer, who returned fire, hitting the man at least once, the police chief said.

Authorities said officers at the scene began first aid treatment until an ambulance arrived. The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The officer wasn’t injured.

Fowler said he couldn’t say yet how many shots were fired during the encounter, but added that the time between the traffic stop and the opening shot was less than two minutes.

“It happened just that quick,” he said.

During a news conference Monday Fowler identified the gunman was Deric Brown, 41, of Syracuse. Fowler said Brown had a prior conviction for weapons possession. State records show Brown went to prison twice after weapon possession convictions, the most recent sentence ending when he was released in 2009.

The officer who shot Brown has been placed on administrative leave as per the department’s protocol for any officer involved in an on-duty shooting, Fowler said. The officer wasn’t wearing a body camera and his car wasn’t equipped with a dashboard video camera, the police chief said.

Officials said a weapon was recovered at the scene of the shooting, located four blocks north of the Syracuse University campus in a neighborhood where many students live.
