Hhgregg says no thanks to Thanksgiving

Daily Freeman (Kingston, NY) - - BUSINESS -

Consumer electronics chain hhgregg says it will stay closed on Thanksgiving, the latest retailer to take a stand against shopping on the holiday.

The Indianapolis-based chain says it’s important for staff to be home with their families on Thanksgiving. It says it also makes good business sense, as it hasn’t had much of a spike in business on past Thanksgivings.

Hhgregg stores will re-open the day after Thanksgiving on so-called “Black Friday,” known for crowds and sales. The kickoff to the holiday shopping season has slowly crept into Thanksgiving day in recent years as retailers try to get first dibs on shoppers. Employees complained about lost family time, however, and some consumers objected as well. Other retailers closing on Thanksgiving this year include Mall of America and Staples.
