New Paltz High School students Kate Fishman and Stephanie Stewart-Hill, were named commended students in the 2017 National Merit Scholar Program.

The students, both seniors, were recognized for their strong academic promise demonstrated by their performance on the qualifying test used for program entry. Although they will not continue in this year’s competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, their scores placed them among the top 5 percent of more than 1.6 million students who took the qualifying test.

Fishman enjoys dance and writing and is a member of the Youth for Unity and Interact clubs at New Paltz High. She is hoping to attend either Oberlin College or Middlebury College, where she plans to major in English.

She is the daughter of Julia and Benjamin Fishman.

major in psychology next year at either Stony Brook University, the University at Buffalo or Binghamton University.
