Jay Gak­en­heimer, Sr., 83, of Coun­try Club Drive, died Tues­day, Oct. 18, 2016, at his res­i­dence.

Born May 8, 1933, in Kingston, he was the son of the late Ralph and Cather­ine Gak­en­heimer. A Vet­eran of the U.S. Army, he was hon­or­ably dis­charged in 1956. He was em­ployed at IBM, re­tir­ing in 1990 and he later worked as a school cross­ing guard at Ri­car­rdi and Mt. Mar­ion Ele­men­tary Schools.

Ac­tive in Fire Ser­vice since 1949, he was a mem­ber for over 50 years with the Mt. Mar­ion Fire Co., where he served as a Past Chief, Fire Com­mis­sioner and Po­lice Cap­tain. He en­joyed camp­ing, hunt­ing and his daily out­ings to the Good Guy Garage and the Vil­lage Diner.

Pre­de­ceased by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Tymeson, sur­vivors in­clude two sons, Jay Jr. (Donna) of Saugerties and Stephen (Betty) Gak­en­heimer of Mt. Mar­ion; one daugh­ter, Diane Swart of Saugerties; and three grand­chil­dren, Jonathan Swart and Nicole and Traci Gak­en­heimer. Two sis­ters, Joan Werner and June Marks, and sev­eral nieces and neph­ews also sur­vive.

His Fu­neral Ser­vice will be held 10 a.m. Fri­day at the Sea­mon-Wilsey Fu­neral Home, Inc., Corner of John and Lafayette Sts. In­ter­ment will fol­low in the Blue Mt. Ceme­tery. Friends will be re­ceived 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thurs­day.
