Jay Gakenheimer, Sr., 83, of Country Club Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at his residence.
Born May 8, 1933, in Kingston, he was the son of the late Ralph and Catherine Gakenheimer. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he was honorably discharged in 1956. He was employed at IBM, retiring in 1990 and he later worked as a school crossing guard at Ricarrdi and Mt. Marion Elementary Schools.
Active in Fire Service since 1949, he was a member for over 50 years with the Mt. Marion Fire Co., where he served as a Past Chief, Fire Commissioner and Police Captain. He enjoyed camping, hunting and his daily outings to the Good Guy Garage and the Village Diner.
Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Tymeson, survivors include two sons, Jay Jr. (Donna) of Saugerties and Stephen (Betty) Gakenheimer of Mt. Marion; one daughter, Diane Swart of Saugerties; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Swart and Nicole and Traci Gakenheimer. Two sisters, Joan Werner and June Marks, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
His Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., Corner of John and Lafayette Sts. Interment will follow in the Blue Mt. Cemetery. Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.
Family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Mt. Marion Fire Dept.
