U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday and extended their gains from the day before. Energy companies made the biggest gains after the price of oil jumped to a 15-month high. That came after a government report showed a surprise drop in U.S. oil stockpiles. Bank stocks continued to rise on strong earnings. Household products makers and health care companies both slipped. Homebuilders mostly rose, but a Commerce Department report showed that home construction continued to slow in September. Bond prices didn’t move much and yields were steady. Stocks overseas were steady after a report showed China’s economy grew at a solid pace in the third quarter.
