SUNY New Paltz wins to earn berth in tourney

The SUNY New Paltz men’s soc­cer team clinched a spot in the State Univer­sity of New York Ath­letic Con­fer­ence tour­na­ment by beat­ing Buf­falo State 1-0 in its reg­u­lar sea­son fi­nale.

Just two min­utes be­fore half­time, se­nior Char­lie Versen pounced on a mis­placed ball sent by a de­fender back to Bengals goal­keeper An­dreas Queen and punched it in for the goal.

The Hawks, who fin­ished the reg­u­lar cam­paign 4-3-2 in the con­fer­ence and 8-3-7 over­all, earned the fifth seed and will play the Bengals again next Satur­day for a 1 p.m. quar­ter­fi­nal match. Buf­falo State (5-4, 10-6-1, is the fourth seed.

John Guzzo made two saves to record his fifth shutout of the sea­son for New Paltz.
