Cort­land edges SUNY New Paltz

NEW PALTZ » SUNY New Paltz’s field hockey team lost 2-1 to Cort­land in its State Univer­sity of New York Ath­letic Con­fer­ence reg­u­lar-sea­son fi­nale.

The Hawks fin­ished 9-6 over­all and 5-1 in the con­fer­ence. New Paltz is the se­cond seed in the SUNYAC tour­na­ment and will host No. 3 Ge­ne­seo in the semi­fi­nals 2 p.m. Nov. 2. The Hawks have a non­con­fer­ence match Wed­nes­day at Rens­se­laer Polytech­nic In­sti­tute.

Kayla McKeveny gave the Hawks the early lead four min­utes into the match. Cort­land tied it on Jes­sica Welsh’s goal off Gabby Stein’s as­sist 13 min­utes into the se­cond half and went ahead when Anna Branch tapped in Jess Gibaldi’s feed with 11 min­utes left in reg­u­la­tion.

Me­gan Gangewere had three saves for New Paltz.
