N.Y. ear­marks $500K in grants for field trips to state parks

New York state is set­ting aside $500,000 to en­cour­age more school field trips to state parks.

State parks of­fi­cials say they are of­fer­ing grants to qual­i­fied pub­lic schools through­out New York to fund field trips to parks and his­toric sites for en­vi­ron­men­tal, his­tory or phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion.

The grant is avail­able to stu­dents in kindergarten through 12th grade in pub­lic schools that get Ti­tle 1 fund­ing for dis­ad­van­taged stu­dents.

State parks of­fi­cials say more than 120 schools across the state have ap­plied for grants so far.

New York has 180 state parks and 35 his­toric sites.
