A groundbreaking ceremony for the Lenape Elementary School amphitheater will take place at 4 p.m. Friday at the school on Eugene L. Brown Drive.

The amphitheater project, led by the Duzine/Lenape Parent-Teacher Association, calls for a 500-seat performance, education and gathering space that would serve the entire New Paltz school district community, according to the district.

Lenape Elementary School principal Audrey Wood said the venue will be used for drama and music performances and the fifth grade moving up ceremony in June 2017.

District Superintendent Maria Rice said the space will be available to the community when it is not being used by the district.

The estimated cost of the project is $125,000, an amount the PTA is in the process of raising through various fundraising efforts, including the sale of “tribute bricks” and a GoFund-Me page.
