Rondout Valley, which has won the Class B field hockey title the last five years, will be bidding to add a new letter to its collection Friday when the Ganders play for Section 9’s Class C championship.

Rondout Valley, which has won the Class B field hockey title the last five years, will be bidding to add a new letter to its collection Friday when the Ganders play for Section 9’s Class C championship.

Rondout beat Spackenkill 2-0 to advance to the 3:30 p.m. final at Dietz Stadium. The Ganders will play Onteora, which defeated Webutuck 1-0 in overtime. Rondout 2, Spackenkill 0

The (11-3-3) Ganders got first-half goals from Courtney Coffey and Erin Weimann to take charge of their semifinal match.

Coffey scored 5:39 into the match as a perfect series of passes within the circle set up Makaylah Mutz’s hard stroke to Coffey at the right post for the tip-in.

Rondout scored again with 6:09 left in the half off a penalty corner. Spartan goalkeeper Elizabeth Schwoerer stopped the initial shot, but Weimann banged in the rebound.

The Ganders outshot Spackenkill 16-1. Schwoerer had nine saves, while Rondout’s Courtney Smith made one for the shutout.

Rondout is 20 students short of being a Class B for field hockey this year. The last time the Ganders were Class C in this sport was 1985. Onteora 1, Webutuck 0

Hailey Mainieri finished off a perfect possession and scored with 52 seconds left in the first OT to give Onteora the victory.

“Hailey controlled the ball perfectly and was able to score in the corner,” Onteora coach Nicole Murphy said. “Overall, the game was pretty balanced and tense Most of the game was done within the 25-yard lines with not too many shots on goal.”

The Eagles might have had their collective hearts in their throats earlier in the overtime when Webutuck got a breakaway. It was a 2-on-1 and the lone defender was goalie Baileigh Griese. The junior came out of the cage, rushed the players and got the ball out of the circle.

“Webutuck gave us a tough game with many breakaways by Julia Butts, but my defense of Ryan Wright and Natalya Morton were able to stop her in her tracks,” Murphy said.
