Threat on Clinton sign draws police attention
The Shandaken chief says patrols in the area have been stepped up during nighttime hours.
Vandalism to a Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine campaign sign in the hamlet of Phoenicia is under investigation, and patrols in the area have been stepped up at night, the police chief said Thursday.
The phrases “Bitch ... I’m going to kill you” and “I watch you every day” were written on the blue and white sign on property owned by Christian Smythe and Swanna MacNair, and a black X was scrawled across the candidates’ names. The words “I’m gonna” were crossed out and replaced with ‘“I’m going to.”
Shandaken Police Chief Chad Storey said the desecration, which he called “the first for us in the town,” is being in- vestigated as criminal mischief. In an email to the Free-
man, Smythe and Mac- Nair wrote, “This is trou- bling and we feel the area should know about this.”
Storey said the threat was “alarming” to Smythe and McNair.
“We’ll try to put everybody’s mind at ease,” the chief said, “I feel as [if] this was someone expressing their political view on someone’s private property.” The chief asked anyone with information about the graffiti to call Shandaken police at (845) 688-9748 or 688-9902.
