Thruway worker struck, killed by ve­hi­cle

Au­thor­i­ties say a Thruway main­te­nance worker has been hit by a ve­hi­cle and killed while help­ing out at an ac­ci­dent scene on a cen­tral New York high­way.

State po­lice say Fri­day that 58-year-old Ron­ald Dem­ing and other work­ers were re­mov­ing a ve­hi­cle dam­aged in an ac­ci­dent from the shoul­der of In­ter­state 90 when a pass­ing SUV sideswiped one of their tow trucks and then hit Dem­ing.

They say the crash hap­pened around 8:15 a.m. Fri­day be­tween Exit 30 and Exit 29A in the south­ern Herkimer County town of Danube, about 60 miles north­west of Al­bany.

The east­bound lanes were re­opened af­ter be­ing closed while troop­ers in­ves­ti­gated. The SUV driver and pas­sen­ger suf­fered mi­nor in­juries. No charges have been filed.

Dem­ing was a heavy con­struc­tion equip­ment op­er­a­tor in the Thruway’s Syra­cuse Di­vi­sion.
