Buf­falo State downed the SUNY New Paltz men’s soc­cer team 2-0 in the State Uni­ver­sity of New York Ath­letic Con­fer­ence quater­fi­nals for its first play­off win since 1984.

The Hawks out­shot the Ben­gals 5-1 in the first half, put couldn’t put one be­tween the posts and the match stayed score­less.

Af­ter 20 more min­utes of score­less play, Buf­falo broke through in the 65th mnute when Bass Sarr con­verted a penalty kick to hand the Ben­gals a 1-0 lead. The call came af­ter ju­nior goal­keeper John Guzzo dived af­ter a loose ball and col­lided with a Buf­falo player, re­sult­ing in the penalty.

The scored stayed 1-0 un­til 78th minute when Bran­don Galanti cap­i­tal­ized

on a mis­play by the New Paltz back line for the fi­nal goal.

The Hawks ended up out­shoot­ing the Ben­gals 11-6 and held a 4-0 edge in cor­ners. Guzzo had one save for New Paltz.

The Hawks fin­ished their sea­son 8-4-7 un­der first-year head coach Kyle Clancy, while the Ben­gals (11-6-1) ad­vance to the semis to face top seed Cort­land Wed­nes­day.
