Richard ‘Rich’ W. Effner, 69, of Rhinebeck
Richard “Rich” W. Effner, 69, of Rhinebeck, formerly of Kingston, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.
Born Aug. 22, 1947, in Kingston, he was a son of the late Wallace and Gretchen (Rowe) Effner.
A graduate of Kingston High School Class of 1965. He entered The United States Coast Guard in 1967. Stationed in Kodiac Alaska, Mobile, Alabama, and Cape Cod, Mass., until he was discharged on June 30, 1980. He is the recipient of National Defense Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon. After discharge, he was a commercial fisherman in Dutch Harbor on the Aleutian Islands. He then became an independent truck driver and retired from Reliable Carriers in 2012.
He loved his grandchildren, NASCAR, reading and politics.
Surviving are his children, Sherrilee Farrell and Jeremy Effner; his brother, John “Jack” Effner; his former wife and best friend, Susan Effner; his grandchildren, Jenna Farrell, Elijah Effner, Judah Effner, Devin Nastaszewski; his great-granddaughter, Aubrey Farrell.
His brother, Wallace “Jimmy” Effner, died previously.
Cremation and memorial arrangements are under the guidance of the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc., 27 Smith Avenue, Kingston. www.jvleahyfh.com Memorial visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
