Richard ‘Rich’ W. Effner, 69, of Rhinebeck

Richard “Rich” W. Effner, 69, of Rhinebeck, for­merly of Kingston, died Fri­day, Oct. 28, 2016, at North­ern Dutchess Hospi­tal in Rhinebeck.

Born Aug. 22, 1947, in Kingston, he was a son of the late Wal­lace and Gretchen (Rowe) Effner.

A grad­u­ate of Kingston High School Class of 1965. He en­tered The United States Coast Guard in 1967. Sta­tioned in Kodiac Alaska, Mo­bile, Alabama, and Cape Cod, Mass., un­til he was dis­charged on June 30, 1980. He is the re­cip­i­ent of Na­tional De­fense Ser­vice Medal, Coast Guard Com­men­da­tion Medal, Coast Guard Mer­i­to­ri­ous Unit Com­men­da­tion Rib­bon. Af­ter dis­charge, he was a com­mer­cial fish­er­man in Dutch Har­bor on the Aleu­tian Is­lands. He then be­came an in­de­pen­dent truck driver and re­tired from Re­li­able Car­ri­ers in 2012.

He loved his grand­chil­dren, NASCAR, read­ing and pol­i­tics.

Sur­viv­ing are his chil­dren, Sher­rilee Far­rell and Jeremy Effner; his brother, John “Jack” Effner; his for­mer wife and best friend, Su­san Effner; his grand­chil­dren, Jenna Far­rell, Eli­jah Effner, Ju­dah Effner, Devin Nas­taszewski; his great-grand­daugh­ter, Aubrey Far­rell.

His brother, Wal­lace “Jimmy” Effner, died pre­vi­ously.

Cre­ma­tion and me­mo­rial ar­range­ments are un­der the guid­ance of the Joseph V. Leahy Fu­neral Home, Inc., 27 Smith Av­enue, Kingston. Me­mo­rial vis­i­ta­tion will be held Wed­nes­day evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the fu­neral home.

A Flag Fold­ing Cer­e­mony will be­gin at 8 p.m. fol­lowed by fam­ily trib­utes. Ex­pres­sions of sym­pa­thy in lieu of flow­ers may be made in the form of con­tri­bu­tions to Sergeant Shawn Far­rell, II Me­mo­rial Schol­ar­ship Fund, 686 Wat­son Hol­low Road, West Shokan, N.Y. 12494, c/o Holly Downie.
