Seven-year prison term for child sex abuser
KINGSTON >> A Kingston man was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in state prison for sexually abusing a child in a Midtown church, according to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
Julio Turcios-Carias, 53, of 97 Downs St., was sentenced by Ulster County Judge Donald A. Williams for sexual abuse as a violent felony, the prosecutor’s office said.
District Attorney Holley Carnright said the abuse occurred at the Iglesia De Dios at 562 Broadway in Kingston while Turcios-Carias was alone with a child under the age of 11. The nature and date of the abuse were not specified.
Carnright, in a prepared statement, said it was “appalling that this man would choose a location that others hold sacred to gain access to an innocent child.”
In addition to the prison sentence, Turcios-Carias will be under 10 years of post-release supervision and will have to register as a sex offender for a minimum of 20 years. Williams also issued an order of protection for the victim that will remain in effect until Nov. 2, 2041.
Turcios-Carias is a Honduran citizen who has lived in the United States for about 15 years and could face collateral consequences by federal immigration authorities, Carnright said.
It was not immedi- ately clear Wednesday whether Turcios-Carias was convicted at a trial or pleaded guilty.
