Horse­Play wins grant to help em­power teens

KERHONKSON » Hud­son Val­ley Horse­Play has been awarded a Thrive Grant from the Maya Gold Foun­da­tion to ex­pand its reach with area teens.

“Get­ting Herd,” a free, coed work­shop, will be of­fered from 1 to 3 p.m. Sun­day, Nov. 20, at Ni­chols Field, Horse­Play’s home base. The work­shop, open to 10 teens ages 13 to 16 who live within 30 miles of New Paltz, will in­clude on-the-ground ac­tiv­i­ties with horses to sup­port em­pow­er­ment, ex­plore em­pa­thy, com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills, team­work and cre­ative prob­lem solv­ing. There will be no rid­ing with the pro­gram.

The Maya Gold Foun­da­tion was cre­ated in re­sponse to the death of 15-year-old Maya Gold, a New Paltz High School stu­dent who took her own life in Oc­to­ber 2015.
