Olana hosts diorama activity for youngsters
WHAT: Youth activity, “(ART)venture: My Life in Diorama”
WHEN: Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Wagon House Education Center at Olana State Historic Site, 5720 state Route 9G, Hudson
DETAILS: Artist and author Tara Altebrando will lead “(ART)venture: My Life in diorama.” This event is for youngsters ages 8 to 13 and is designed for them to learn more about writing a novel, making dioramas and how art is a tool for processing their experiences. Altebrando is the author of “My Life in Diorama, The Battle of Darcy Lane” and four other novels for young adults. After a reading and a question-and-answer session with the author about her experience of writing a book for young people, participants will brainstorm on paper about the room they will create, what furnishings or objects will be in their room and what materials they will use to make the room come to life. After sketching out their plan, youngsters will get right to work creating their miniature diorama world with sculpey clay, elaborate papers, fabrics, paint, markers and rug samples. The program also includes an afternoon hike and time for play outside in Olana’s landscape, followed by hot chocolate and a book-signing. The workshop will end with an “exhibition” where each participant can talk about their invented space, and audiences can share what they like about one another’s dioramas. Parents are invited to come in 20 minutes early to see all the creations. The cost of the program is $50 per student, which includes all materials, a copy of the novel and a complete diorama kit. Participants should pack a bagged lunch and wear good outerwear. Space is limited.
