‘Oklahoma!’ opens Thursday at McKenna Theatre
“Oklahoma!” — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical — opens Thursday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. at the McKenna Theatre on the campus of SUNY New Paltz, 1 Hawk Drive, New Paltz.
Set before the 1906 annexation of the Western territory, “Oklahoma!” centers on the bumpy love journey involving two young, high-spirited cowboys vying with an evil ranch hand and a traveling peddler for the hearts of the women they love.
Laurey Williams, a strong-willed farm girl, is torn between her antagonistic flirtation with cowboy Curley McLain and the brooding attention of farmhand Judd Fry. A second love triangle involving Laurey’s friend, Ado Annie Carnes, cowboy Will Parker and the Persian peddler, Ali Hakim, adds layers of comic depth and confusion. As a highly anticipated social event approaches, the characters make choices with life-ordeath consequences.
The drama is carried
along by iconic songs such as “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’” and the rousing title anthem, “Oklahoma!”
Additional 8 p.m. performances will take place Nov. 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19. There will also be Sunday matinee performances on Nov. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors ages 62 and older, SUNY New Paltz faculty and staff and non-SUNY New Paltz students. Admission is $10 for SUNY New Paltz students.
