Sus­pect in dou­ble homi­cide cap­tured

NEW­BURGH >> The teenager wanted in a dou­ble homi­cide last week at a Hal­loween party has been cap­tured, city po­lice said Fri­day evening.

The New­burgh Po­lice Depart­ment said Nija A. John­son, 17, of New­burgh, was taken into cus­tody about 3 p.m. Fri­day out­side of New York state.

Po­lice did not say where John­son was caught and noted it will be “at least sev­eral days” be­fore he is brought back to New­burgh.

Po­lice said pre­vi­ously that John­son would be charged with se­cond-de­gree mur­der.

John­son was iden­ti­fied Mon­day as the sus­pect in the shoot­ing deaths of Omani Free, 18, and Tabitha Cruz, 20. The two young women were fa­tally shot just be­fore 1 a.m. Sun­day dur­ing a Hal­loween party at an apart­ment build­ing at 119 Broad­way in New­burgh.

Five other peo­ple, who were not iden­ti­fied, were struck by gun­fire in the shoot­ings that killed Free and Cruz. Po­lice said all were ex­pected to re­cover.

On Mon­day, New­burgh po­lice an­nounced the ar­rests of Rainier Hamil­ton, 21, and Tyson Oliveira, 20, both of New­burgh, for al­legedly help­ing the gun­man im­me­di­ately af­ter the shoot­ings.

Hamil­ton was charged with the felonies of crim­i­nal pos­ses­sion of a weapon (a hand­gun) and tam­per­ing with ev­i­dence, while; Oliveira was charged with tam­per­ing with phys­i­cal ev­i­dence, po­lice said.
