Suspect in double homicide captured
NEWBURGH >> The teenager wanted in a double homicide last week at a Halloween party has been captured, city police said Friday evening.
The Newburgh Police Department said Nija A. Johnson, 17, of Newburgh, was taken into custody about 3 p.m. Friday outside of New York state.
Police did not say where Johnson was caught and noted it will be “at least several days” before he is brought back to Newburgh.
Police said previously that Johnson would be charged with second-degree murder.
Johnson was identified Monday as the suspect in the shooting deaths of Omani Free, 18, and Tabitha Cruz, 20. The two young women were fatally shot just before 1 a.m. Sunday during a Halloween party at an apartment building at 119 Broadway in Newburgh.
Five other people, who were not identified, were struck by gunfire in the shootings that killed Free and Cruz. Police said all were expected to recover.
On Monday, Newburgh police announced the arrests of Rainier Hamilton, 21, and Tyson Oliveira, 20, both of Newburgh, for allegedly helping the gunman immediately after the shootings.
Hamilton was charged with the felonies of criminal possession of a weapon (a handgun) and tampering with evidence, while; Oliveira was charged with tampering with physical evidence, police said.
