With players from the 2002, ’07 and ’10 football title teams cheering them on, New Paltz High’s 2016 sqauad joined that championship fraternity Friday night as the Huguenots captured the Section 9, Class B crown with a solid performance over Marlboro.
The Hugies dethroned the five-time defending champion Dukes 33-17 in the final at Dietz Stadium.
“I’m in shock right now. This is an amazing feeling. I wouldn’t want to have this feeling with any other group of kids,” New Paltz quarterback Jimmy Verney remarked. “I grew up with these kids. I grew up playing with these kids.
“They come out here every single game and they play their hearts out, every single one of them.”
“I think some people thought we weren’t going to come out here and put our best foot forward tonight,” Hugie coach Tom Tegeler said. “I think the kids proved everybody wrong. I’m just excited for the kids.”
“It’s the best feeling in the world. All my teammates, my coaches, they gave everything they got this season. Now let’s just go win it all,” said Kenny Verney, who was named the game’s defensive MVP.
