Three men face felony charges after home invasion, assault
GREENPORT >> Three men are facing felony charges of burglary and assault following a home invasion late Monday night that left a man and woman injured, authorities said.
Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett said suspects, who he said were found hiding nearby at 8 a.m. Tuesday, were identified as Derek Peeters, 23, of Main Street, Philmont; John Day, 21, of state Route 9G, Greenport; and an 18-year-old male from Chatham whose name was not released. Each was charged with one count of burglary, a felony and two counts of assault, a misdemeanor.
Bartlett said deputies received a report at about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday about a possible home invasion on Middle Road in Greenport.
Deputies determined that the two victims had been in bed, sleeping, when three men entered the residence, turned off the power and assaulted the home owners before fleeing on foot. Deputies and state police later found the three suspects, who they said made admissions as to their involvement in the home invasion.
The male victim was taken by Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a cut to his arm. The woman was treated by Greenport Rescue Squad at the scene, but declined transport to the hospital.
All three suspects were arraigned in Greenport Town Court before the Town Justice Frances Abitable and sent to the Columbia County Jail without bail pending a later court appearance.
