Voters reject Phoenicia Library funding hike
Town residents voted 634-613 against a 72 percent increase for the Phoenicia Library. The proposition asked for an increase from $68,000, to $162,000.
The increase would have been the first since 2011 for the library, which has a $177,000 budget for 2016
The balance above the $94,000 levy that is currently
financed by property taxes comes from donations, grants and state aid.
Librarian Elizabeth Potter said there has been an increase in use of the Phoenicia Library, which last year resumed operations on Main Street five years after it was closed due to a fire.
