Home heat­ing aid avail­able for win­ter

Home En­ergy As­sis­tance Pro­gram (HEAP) grants for the 2016-17 win­ter heat­ing sea­son will be avail­able be­gin­ning Mon­day through lo­cal De­part­ments of So­cial Ser­vices or Of­fices for the Ag­ing.

Cus­tomers ex­pe­ri­enc­ing a fi­nan­cial hard­ship this win­ter are en­cour­aged to ap­ply. Qual­i­fy­ing fam­i­lies also might be el­i­gi­ble to re­ceive ad­di­tional ben­e­fits through Cen­tral Hud­son.

Charles A. Freni, the util­ity’s se­nior vice pres­i­dent of Cus­tomer Ser­vices and Trans­mis­sion & Dis­tri­bu­tion Op­er­a­tions, said el­i­gi­ble fam­i­lies us­ing elec­tric­ity or nat­u­ral gas as their pri­mary heat­ing source can re­ceive a reg­u­lar HEAP ben­e­fit of $350 to $401. He said cer­tain ben­e­fits also are avail­able to el­i­gi­ble cus­tomers who have heat­ing costs in­cluded in rent.

HEAP el­i­gi­bil­ity is based on fam­ily in­come and size. A fam­ily of four earn­ing up to $4,423 per month can qual­ify.
