George R. Sowles, 80, of Saugerties
George R. Sowles, 80, of Malden Tpk., died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at the Kingston Hospital after a brief illness with his family at his side.
Born Jan. 15, 1936, in Saugerties, he was the son of the late Edward and Pauline Sowles. A Graduate of Saugerties High School Class of 1954, he served in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., and in Fort Dix, N.J. He was employed for over 40 years at Pesce’s Bakery and was a former member of the Malden West Camp Fire Company.
An avid sportsman, he loved to fish, hunt, trap, and archery. His hobbies included gardening and woodcarving of birds and waterfowl, which he would take to craft fairs, and riding his scooter. He looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Lake Oneida.
Survivors include his wife, Gaetana, with whom he recently celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary; one daughter, Deborah and her husband Timothy Martino; one son, Edward Sowles and his girlfriend Sharon VanVechten; and one grandson, Kevin Martino and his significant other, Victoria Lapiana.
His Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Sts. Interment will follow in the Blue Mt. Cemetery. Friends will be received Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Diaz Ambulance or the Malden West Camp Fire Company.
