Elaine Knif­fen, 101, Black Moun­tain, N.C., passed away Sept. 15, 2016, at High­land Farms Re­tire­ment Com­mu­nity.

She has been a res­i­dent of Black Moun­tain for the past 13 years. Elaine was born July 28, 1915, in New Paltz, N.Y., to the late Webb Knif­fen and Lola Van Vleet Knif­fen. She re­ceived her Bach­e­lor’s De­gree at SUNY New Paltz and her Mas­ter of Arts in Ed­u­ca­tion from New York Univer­sity. Elaine re­tired in 1975 from North­portEast North­port Schools on Long Is­land.

She was a mu­si­cian, teacher, lover and pro­moter of clas­si­cal mu­sic and avid lis­tener to WCQS. She loved the his­tory of the Hud­son Val­ley, an­thro­pol­ogy and the out­doors.

Elaine is sur­vived by her three first cousins once-re­moved who re­mained in touch un­til her death: Donna Whalen of Dover Plains, N.Y., Al­berta Dar­nell of Lit­tle River, S.C., Linda Hamil­ton and hus­band, Harry Hamil­ton, of Lau­r­in­burg, N.C.; many cousins in the Hud­son Val­ley of New York; and friends, Raymond Hon­ey­cutt of Wash­ing­ton, D.C., and Han­nah Stampe of Asheville, N.C.

A memo­rial ser­vice will be held at High­land Farms Re­tire­ment Com­mu­nity on Nov. 26, 2016, at 3 p.m.
