Elaine Kniffen, 101, of Black Mountain, N.C.
Elaine Kniffen, 101, Black Mountain, N.C., passed away Sept. 15, 2016, at Highland Farms Retirement Community.
She has been a resident of Black Mountain for the past 13 years. Elaine was born July 28, 1915, in New Paltz, N.Y., to the late Webb Kniffen and Lola Van Vleet Kniffen. She received her Bachelor’s Degree at SUNY New Paltz and her Master of Arts in Education from New York University. Elaine retired in 1975 from NorthportEast Northport Schools on Long Island.
She was a musician, teacher, lover and promoter of classical music and avid listener to WCQS. She loved the history of the Hudson Valley, anthropology and the outdoors.
Elaine is survived by her three first cousins once-removed who remained in touch until her death: Donna Whalen of Dover Plains, N.Y., Alberta Darnell of Little River, S.C., Linda Hamilton and husband, Harry Hamilton, of Laurinburg, N.C.; many cousins in the Hudson Valley of New York; and friends, Raymond Honeycutt of Washington, D.C., and Hannah Stampe of Asheville, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at Highland Farms Retirement Community on Nov. 26, 2016, at 3 p.m.
