Fire ravages senior apartment building
About three dozen senior citizens escaped with only the bed clothes on their backs early Tuesday when a fire engulfed a building at the Hughson Commons housing complex in this Putnam County town,
The blaze broke out shortly before 4 a.m. and drew fire companies from Putnam, Dutchess and Westchester counties.
Firefighters working on ladders poured thousands of gallons of water onto the blaze from above while others attacked the fire from the ground.
The Journal News reported four apartments were destroyed and six others were damaged. The newspaper said Hughson Commons has a total of 94 units in three buildings.
Residents of the housing complex, many frail, were taken to a recreation area, where they contacted loved ones. Others were provided shelter by the American Red Cross.
One police officer was overcome by smoke and was treated at Putnam Hospital Center.
There was no immediate conclusion about the cause of the fire.
The fire rages before dawn Tuesday in the Putnam County town of Carmel.
