The SUNY New Paltz women’s bas­ket­ball team won its sea­son opener, hold­ing off Vas­sar for a 74-71 vic­tory. Se­nior Kit Small led the Hawks with 22 points, leav­ing her just five shot of 1,000 for her ca­reer.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s bas­ket­ball team won its sea­son opener Tues­day night, hold­ing off Vas­sar for a 74-71 vic­tory.

Vas­sar, which hit eight 3-point field goals in the game, tried to tie on Isa Peczuh’s trey as time ex­pired, but the shot hit the rim.

Se­nior Kit Small led the Hawks with 22 points, leav­ing her just five shot of 1,000 for her ca­reer.

Court­ney Irby had 16 points and 11 re­bounds and fresh­man Paige Niemeyer came off the bench for 15 in her col­le­giate de­but for New Paltz. The trio com­bined to make 14 of 23 foul shots in the second half.

The Hawks were out-re­bounded 49-30, but made up that dis­crep­ancy by forc­ing 29 turnovers.

So­phie Nick led Vas­sar with 18 points.

New Paltz com­petes in the Chuck Resler Tour­na­ment in Rochester start­ing Fri­day.
