No locals advance to state finals
Area athletes failed to qualify for Saturday’s final day of competition in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls swim meet at Ithaca College.
Kingston High’s Taylor Robey, plus New Paltz’s Morgane Kuyl, and Kaela, Abigail and Bella Santos all competed in Friday’s preliminaries. The top 30 return for Saturday’s championship (1-10), consolation (11-20) and bonus (21-30) finals, but none could accomplish that task.
Robey came all so close to qualifying for the bonus finals in the 100-yard freestyle. She swam 54.08 seconds in the heat — well off her school record of 53.37 and just five-hundreths of a second from the 30th and last qualifying spot. The senior finished 32nd overall. She is officially one of two alternates for the event.
The closest New Paltz had to a Saturday return was in the 200 medley relay. The team was 36th in 1:53.45, missing a spot in the bonus finals by six-hundreths
of a second. The same quartet were 45th in the 200 free relay with a 1:43.30.
Abigail Santos, a sophomore, placed 41st in the 50-free with a 24.91 performance. Kaela, a senior, took 57th in the butterfly with a 1:00.77. Kuyl, also a senior, was 55th overall in the 100-free with a 55.25 effort.
