Local jobless rates hold near year-ago levels
Unemployment in Ulster and Dutchess counties was virtually unchanged from October 2015 to October 2016.
Unemployment rates in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Catskills were little changed from October 2015 to October 2016, the state Department of Labor reported Tuesday.
The Ulster County jobless rate last month was 4.2 percent, down from 4.3 percent a year earlier, while the Dutchess County rate held steady at 4.1 percent, the labor office said.
Columbia County’s unemployment rate ticked up from 3.4 percent to 3.5 percent over the 12-month span, but Columbia’s October 2016 rate still was the lowest in the state, according to the department.
Elsewhere in the region, the October 2016 jobless rates were:
• 4.6 percent in Greene County, down from 4.8 percent in October 2015.
• 4.8 percent in Delaware County, unchanged.
• 4.7 percent in Sullivan County, down from 4.8 percent.
• 4.3 percent in Orange County, unchanged.
The statewide unemployment rate last month was 5 percent, up from 4.7 percent in October 2015, the labor department said.
The highest unemployment rate among the state’s 62 counties last month was 7.7 percent in the Bronx.
