Lo­cal job­less rates hold near year-ago lev­els

Un­em­ploy­ment in Ul­ster and Dutchess coun­ties was vir­tu­ally un­changed from Oc­to­ber 2015 to Oc­to­ber 2016.

Un­em­ploy­ment rates in the Mid-Hud­son Val­ley and Catskills were lit­tle changed from Oc­to­ber 2015 to Oc­to­ber 2016, the state Depart­ment of La­bor re­ported Tues­day.

The Ul­ster County job­less rate last month was 4.2 per­cent, down from 4.3 per­cent a year ear­lier, while the Dutchess County rate held steady at 4.1 per­cent, the la­bor of­fice said.

Columbia County’s un­em­ploy­ment rate ticked up from 3.4 per­cent to 3.5 per­cent over the 12-month span, but Columbia’s Oc­to­ber 2016 rate still was the low­est in the state, ac­cord­ing to the depart­ment.

Else­where in the re­gion, the Oc­to­ber 2016 job­less rates were:

• 4.6 per­cent in Greene County, down from 4.8 per­cent in Oc­to­ber 2015.

• 4.8 per­cent in Delaware County, un­changed.

• 4.7 per­cent in Sul­li­van County, down from 4.8 per­cent.

• 4.3 per­cent in Orange County, un­changed.

The statewide un­em­ploy­ment rate last month was 5 per­cent, up from 4.7 per­cent in Oc­to­ber 2015, the la­bor depart­ment said.

The high­est un­em­ploy­ment rate among the state’s 62 coun­ties last month was 7.7 per­cent in the Bronx.
