Thanksgiving Day

The major U.S. stock exchanges will be closed today for Thanksgiving.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq market will reopen for business on Friday. However, trading will close at 1 p.m. EST.

Ready, set, shop!

Will holiday season shoppers spend more on gifts this year than in 2015?

Retailers will begin to get a feel for that on Black Friday, the traditional start to the annual holiday shopping season. All told, the National Retail Federation projects that shoppers will spend $655.8 billion in November and December. That would be a gain of 3.6 percent from a year ago.

Dine and dash

As in recent years, many retailers are hoping shoppers won’t wait until Black Friday to do some bargain-hunting.

Several big retailers are opening doors today, including J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Wal-Mart Stores and Target. For shoppers who’d rather skip the crowds, J.C. Penney and Kohl’s are among the big retail chains that are also making their door-buster deals available online.
