Vincent J. Hackett, 83, of Saugerties
Vincent J. Hackett a native and life long resident of Saugerties passed away peacefully at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine, N.Y., on Nov. 26, 2016.
Vince was born on Sept. 27, 1933 in Saugerties, N.Y. He was the son of the late Madeline Brown and James Leonard Hackett. He graduated from Saugerties High School in 1951, and was previously employed by IBM. Vince defined his life by the love of family and community service. Vince left Saugerties to serve his country during the Korean Conflict. It was during this time, stationed in Quantico, Va., where he met the love of his life Jeniece Lynette Leckwatch at a USO event. Vince was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corp and moved to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he worked for IBM. He subsequently moved back to his hometown of Saugerties. Vince was a Quarter Century Club member and made many lasting friendships during his career at IBM. He was very active in the community. To his children and their friends, he was most remembered for his involvement in sports. He was the head of Saint Mary’s CYO for many years. He coached baseball from Grasshoppers through Babe Ruth, Moose League tournaments and Biddy League. He was also active in the Saugerties High School Booster Club, and served on the Saugerties Recreation Board for many years. In his youth he was a regular on local baseball teams, and a member of the SHS basketball and football teams in the late 40’s. Vince even spent time as a gym coach at Saint Mary’s Elementary School. Vince was honored by the induction into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 for his long time service to the Saugerties sports community. He was also a Republican committeeman and remained active in local politics for many years. He was a member of the local American Legion Post 72. His focus was always to improve the community for current and future generations. Vince enjoyed spending time with his family as well as fishing, boating and hunting.
Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Ferrara (Michael Jenilyn (Jared) Gary Gregory) all of Saugerties and Marie Brandt (Brett) of Saugerties (Craig) of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sons, Arnold “Arnie” (Patti) Hackett (Justin, Christine) of Cary, N.C. and James “Lenny” (Lisa) Hackett (Tim and Kevin) of Raleigh, N.C., (Colleen (Josh) of New Bern, N.C.) and a daughter-in-law, Alice Hackett (Alissa) of the Town of Ulster. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren; his sister, Madeline Curtiss of Poughkeepsie; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jeniece; a son, Clark J.; grandson, Alton James Hackett; as well as his sister, Helen Bach; and brother, James “Bud” Hackett.
His Funeral Procession will form 9:15 a.m. on Friday at the SeamonWilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Thence to St. Mary of the Snow Church where a 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Burial with Military Honors by Post 72, will follow in the St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
