'Miracle' coming to Main Street on Saturday
The new community event, featuring a tree lighting and music, will help usher in the 2016 holiday season.
A new community event this weekend will help usher in the holiday season.
“Miracle on Main Street,” starting at 5 p.m. Saturday in Phoenicia’s business district, will feature a treelighting ceremony, musical performances, caroling, hot cocoa and a visit from Santa aboard an M.F. Whitney Hose Company fire truck.
Brooke Bailey, proprietor of the Glass Mountain Inn in Phoenicia, said the event grew out of a holiday chat she and a friend were having.
“Jennifer Montalbano, a local mom and friend, was telling me how great it would be if we had a treelighting for our kids on Main Street,” Bailey said. “We started brainstorming how to tie together a Main Street tree-lighting ceremony with the M.F. Whitney annual Christmas party. We reached out to Main Street businesses, and they were more than happy to participate . ... We were received with nothing but enthusiasm and help from the community.”
Helping to put on the event are Ulster Savings Bank, Amy’s Take Away & Catering, Migliorelli Farms and the Nest Egg.
The Phoenicia Business Association has turned the event partly into a fundraiser for the M.F. Whitney company thanks to a sugar plum of an idea: The winner of a raffle will pull the switch that lights the tree, and proceeds will go to the fire department.
The raffle tickets, which cost $2 each, can be purchased at shops and eateries in Phoenicia.
At 6 p.m. the M.F. Whitney firehouse will become Phoenicia’s North Pole, offering free drinks and snacks, face painting, a Christmas craft table and photos with Santa. Also at the firehouse, members of the Shandaken Theatrical Society will perform a scene from their current production of “Miracle on 34th Street.”
The theater group’s production of “Miracle on 34th Street,” based on a 1948 adaptation for radio, will be on stage from Dec. 2 to 18 at the STS Playhouse, 10 Church St., Phoenicia. Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $20 ($18 for students and senior citizens). For tickets, go to bit.ly/2fWJTT5 or call (845) 688-2279.
The STS production will be directed by Linda Burkhardt. The cast comprises Tom Alfano, Kailee Cornelison, David Dancyger, Ann Davies, Erin Giuditta, Bridget Harkin, Burr Hubble, Jeremy McLaughlin, Amos Newcombe, Alan Shevlo and Faye Storms.
Storefronts on Main Street in Phoenicia are decorated for the holiday season.
