Exhibit shows artistry of WWI medals, posters
A new exhibition at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College explores the art of the medals and posters of World War I.
“The Art of Devastation: Medals and Posters of the Great War,” a joint project between the Art Center and the American Numismatic Society, will be on view Jan. 27 through April 9. Admission is free.
This exhibit of 117 medals from both sides of the Great War reasserts their significance as works of art and coincides with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into the war. The medals are complemented by 14 war posters. A checklist of objects in the exhibition can be found online at http://bit. ly/2gBs1ux.
The medals on view in The Art of Devastation come from the permanent collection of the American Numismatic Society in New York and one private collection. War posters are on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Vassar College Libraries.
