An Orange County grand jury has indicted Jauntae Brown, 20, of Spring Valley, for second-degree murder in the death of Silver Lake volunteer firefighter Justin Speights.

Speights, also 20, was fatally stabbed with a knife early on New Year’s Day 2016 when he tried to break up a fight outside a house party in the town of Crawford.

It took law enforcement almost a year to develop the evidence that led to Brown’s arrest in early December. The indictment charges Brown with murder, manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon.

Brown is being held in the Orange County Jail.

Speights lived in the Orange County community of Scotchtown, was a graduate of Pine Bush High School and was a four-year member of the Silver Lake Fire Department.

Two other men arrested in connection with his death were charged with tampering with evidence.
