Pa­tri­cia A. Harder, 65, of Wilm­ing­ton, Del., passed away peace­fully at home on Wed­nes­day, Jan. 11, 2017. A nurse, for­mer DuPont re­searcher and 35year Wilm­ing­ton res­i­dent, she was in home hospice care af­ter bat­tling can­cer the past year.

Pat was born in Kingston, N.Y., the home of her an­ces­tors since the 1650’s, and grew up in Cedar Grove, N.J. She grad­u­ated from Lake For­est Col­lege and be­gan her first ca­reer in bi­o­log­i­cal re­search at the Univer­sity of Illi­nois. She then worked in re­search for 20 years at the DuPont Ex­per­i­men­tal Sta­tion.

Pat stud­ied nurs­ing at the Univer­sity of Delaware and re­ceived her 2nd de­gree in 2004, and had suc­cess­ful surgery for can­cer the fol­low­ing year. She worked at Chris­tiana and St. Fran­cis Hos­pi­tals for the past 12 years, her last shift just three months ago.

An avid gar­dener and ge­neal­o­gist, Pat spent her free week­ends and va­ca­tions at her home on the moun­tain near Hur­ley, N.Y., usu­ally with one of her pet cats and a pile of books. She took plea­sure in shar­ing fam­ily his­tory and spend­ing time with her many rel­a­tives in Ul­ster County and be­yond.

Sur­viv­ing are her two broth­ers, John E. Harder (Ja­nine) and James A. Harder; two nieces, Jen­nifer and Cather­ine; two neph­ews, Michael and Robertl; and many aunts, un­cles and cousins who will al­ways know her as Patty.

She was pre­de­ceased by her fa­ther, John R. Harder, known as Jack; her mother, Shirley; and her nephew, J.T. Harder.

A grave­side ser­vice will be held Mon­day, Jan. 16, 2017, at the Hur­ley Ceme­tery in Hur­ley, N.Y. In lieu of flow­ers, please con­trib­ute to the Na­tional Wildlife Fed­er­a­tion ( and lo­cal an­i­mal wel­fare or­ga­ni­za­tions.
